Building a new home is a big deal. But once the house is done, the backyard can feel like an afterthought - a blank slate with no clear direction. That's exactly the kind of situation where we get to do some of our best work.

This outdoor living space in White Lake Township was part of a new construction build right on the water. The homeowners wanted something functional and well-designed - not just a slab out back. So we built a two-tier patio layout that separates the fire pit area from the lounge space, giving each zone its own purpose without feeling disconnected from the other.

The lower tier features large-format pavers in a dark slate finish that carry a lot of visual weight and hold up well with heavy use. The upper tier steps up to a built-in square fire pit surrounded by Adirondack seating - a layout that works for a crowd and keeps everyone close to the fire. Behind that, a pergola-covered lounge area ties the whole space together and gives the property a natural flow from inside the house to the water's edge.

What makes this kind of build work is planning the transitions early. The step detail between tiers, the way the pergola anchors the upper level, the sight line to the lake - none of that happens by accident. When you're starting from scratch on a new construction lot, you have the flexibility to get it right from the ground up. That's a real advantage, and it's one we don't take lightly.

White Lake Township properties with waterfront access deserve outdoor spaces that match the setting. This one does exactly that.
